Pedestrian Killed in Del Norte County Hit-and-Run Involving Multiple Vehicles

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) in Crescent City is investigating a tragic hit-and-run accident that occurred on Wednesday night in Del Norte County, resulting in the death of a pedestrian. The accident happened near Northcrest Drive and East Madison Avenue as the pedestrian was crossing the street in a marked crosswalk. The victim’s identity has not been released pending family notification.

The initial collision involved a 2019 Nissan Rogue driven by 36-year-old Alexandra Diehl, who struck the pedestrian and fled the scene. Following this impact, a northbound Toyota 4-Runner hit the pedestrian’s metal shopping cart. Shortly thereafter, a third vehicle, a white Kia, attempted to avoid the pedestrian but was unable to do so. The driver of the Kia stayed at the scene and fully cooperated with law enforcement.

Emergency responders transported the pedestrian to Sutter Coast Hospital in critical condition. Despite efforts to save the individual, the pedestrian succumbed to their injuries shortly after 9 p.m. that evening.

Authorities located the Nissan Rogue around 8:35 p.m., identifying Diehl as the driver responsible for the hit-and-run. She was arrested and charged with felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter.

This incident underscores the dangers pedestrians face and the severe consequences of fleeing the scene of an accident. The CHP is continuing its investigation and has urged anyone with additional information to contact their Crescent City office at (707) 218-2000.

This tragic event has left the community in shock and mourning. Officials remind drivers of the importance of remaining at the scene after any collision to ensure that those involved receive prompt medical care. Further details, including the victim’s identity, are expected as the investigation progresses.
