Ramon Rivera, a 51-year-old man accused of carrying out a fatal stabbing spree that claimed the lives of three individuals in Midtown Manhattan, is set to appear in court on Tuesday. Rivera faces three counts of first-degree murder for the attacks, which unfolded in a span of approximately 2.5 hours on Monday. The victims have been identified as Angel Lata Landi, 36, a construction worker; a 67-year-old fisherman whose name has not been disclosed; and Wilma Augustin, 36. Rivera was apprehended shortly after the attacks and, according to police sources, confessed to the murders during interrogation. On November 19, 2023, he was found lying on a curb in Flushing, Queens, behaving erratically and complaining of physical discomfort. The following month, he placed a 911 call in Brooklyn claiming he was suicidal and feared someone wanted him dead. In both cases, he was taken to hospitals for treatment, but his long-term care and follow-up remain unclear.
Rivera’s criminal record paints a picture of escalating instability. In December 2023, he was arrested for stealing steaks from a Bronx grocery store, followed by a series of break-ins at Manhattan businesses where he stole items like lighters, cigarettes, and vaping products. Despite these repeated offenses, Rivera was often released without significant intervention, a pattern critics argue failed both him and public safety. His release without bail after the Soho incident drew particular scrutiny, as prosecutors had requested bail but were overruled by the presiding judge.
