14-Year-Old Oxford, IN, Boy, David Fitch, Dies Unexpectedly

OXFORD, IN — On Friday, November 15, 2024, the tight-knit community of Oxford, Indiana, mourned the unexpected loss of David Joshua Fitch, a beloved 14-year-old eighth-grade student at Benton Central Junior High School. David died suddenly, leaving behind a family and community heartbroken by his passing.

Born on August 25, 2010, in Lafayette, Indiana, David was the son of Christopher David Fitch and Kimberly Jo Newnum Fitch. His family, which includes his parents, his sister Emily, his brother Nathan, as well as his maternal and paternal grandparents, is devastated by his untimely death. He is survived by his grandparents Sandy and David Meadows of Milligan, Pat Conner of Clinton, and Patty Fitch of Fairview, alongside numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who were an integral part of his life.

David’s grandparents, David Earl Newnum and Gary Francis Fitch, had predeceased him. Despite the loss, his family remembers him fondly, not only for his love of sports but also for his sense of adventure and his close relationship with his father and grandpa. David was baptized at the Oxford United Methodist Church on August 25, 2013, and was an active member of the church, which became an important part of his life.

Known for his energetic spirit, David enjoyed spending time outdoors. He had a deep love for sports, which included playing baseball, soccer, football, track, and golf. His passion for competition was matched only by his enthusiasm for spending time with his family. He especially delighted in working alongside his dad and grandpa, forming memories that will live on in his family's hearts.

David was also a devoted fan of the Chicago Cubs, a hobby that brought him joy in both win and loss. His energy and zeal for life left a lasting impression on all who knew him. He was the kind of young person who could bring a smile to anyone's face with his enthusiasm, and his loss has left an irreplaceable void in his family and community.

The Fitch family has announced funeral arrangements for their son. A service will be held at Gooch Funeral Home, located at 112 W. Howard Street, Rockville, on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Steve Crum will officiate the ceremony. Following the service, David will be laid to rest at Bethany Cemetery in Marshall, Indiana. Visitation for family and friends will be held at Gooch Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 19, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Benton County Community Foundation to support the Oxford Church Camp Fund, which holds a special place in David’s heart. Donations can be sent to PO Box 351, Fowler, IN 47971, or made online at bentoncf.org.

As the community of Oxford comes together to remember David, his family finds solace in the love and support surrounding them. David’s memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and everyone who was touched by his spirit. His passing serves as a reminder of the importance of family, love, and the preciousness of life itself.
