Man Ejected and Killed in Early-Morning DUI Accident in Tulare County

A fatal early-morning car crash in Tulare County has left one man dead, adding to California’s growing concern over impaired driving. In the predawn hours, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to reports of reckless driving along Highway 198, eastbound near Highway 99, just outside Visalia. Shortly after the initial call came in at around 4:00 a.m., another report reached CHP, this time of a severe accident involving the same vehicle. The car, a Honda Sedan driven by a man in his late 20s, had careened off the roadway, collided with a fence, and rolled over several times before coming to a halt.

According to CHP officials, the driver was believed to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash. Investigators indicated that he was speeding and driving erratically just before the incident. Tragically, the driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle due to the force of the rollover, sustaining fatal injuries. Although emergency responders arrived swiftly, there was little they could do as the injuries were catastrophic.

Fatalities in DUI-related crashes continue to present a significant public safety issue in California. In Tulare County, the problem of impaired driving has become increasingly prominent. Statewide, the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) reports that DUI incidents account for a notable percentage of highway fatalities. Alcohol-impaired crashes represent one of the leading causes of roadway deaths in California, with thousands of lives lost each year in accidents attributed to impaired driving. In response, CHP and local law enforcement regularly set up DUI checkpoints, especially around holidays, in an effort to deter and reduce incidents of impaired driving. Despite these efforts, this latest tragedy adds to a troubling trend in Tulare County, which has seen several DUI-related fatalities over recent years.

This incident also highlights the ongoing issue of seatbelt non-compliance, particularly among drivers involved in high-speed crashes. Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has shown that seatbelts are one of the most effective safety devices in reducing fatalities and severe injuries in car crashes. When drivers or passengers fail to wear seatbelts, the risk of being ejected from the vehicle—often resulting in fatal outcomes—rises significantly. Studies indicate that over 80% of individuals ejected in crashes do not survive, underscoring the crucial role of seatbelt use. In this case, CHP confirmed that the driver’s failure to buckle up contributed to the fatal result.

In response to this tragic incident, CHP is urging all motorists to be vigilant about safety on the roads, emphasizing that impaired driving and speeding are a deadly combination. They continue to stress the importance of responsible driving, particularly during the early hours when visibility is low, and drivers may be more fatigued. Tulare County’s law enforcement and public safety advocates are using this case as another call to action for heightened awareness and adherence to safe driving practices.

Authorities have not released the name of the deceased driver, pending notification of family. As investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident continue, CHP is urging witnesses or anyone with additional information to come forward to aid in reconstructing the moments leading up to the crash.

As Tulare County residents reflect on yet another life lost on the road, public officials and safety advocates reiterate the need for a collective effort to make California’s highways safer. This includes not only responsible driving but also a commitment from community members to report unsafe behavior when observed.
