James Stokes Killed in Chain-Reaction Crash  on I-81 Near Exit 80



In a devastating crash on the northbound lanes of Interstate 81 near Exit 80 (Route 743/Grantville/Hershey) in East Hanover Township, James Stokes, a 27-year-old Cresco resident, lost his life. The collision, which occurred at approximately 2:40 a.m., involved a chain reaction among multiple vehicles, resulting in one fatality and injuries to others.  


According to a report released by the Pennsylvania State Police, the tragic incident began when a vehicle traveling in the right lane rear-ended another vehicle, causing the first to jackknife. A third vehicle then collided with the second, propelling the third into the left lane. Moments later, a fourth vehicle struck the third vehicle, causing a fire to erupt.  


James Stokes, a front-seat passenger in the third vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. The drivers of the second and third vehicles were transported to Hershey Medical Center for evaluation and treatment. Their current conditions have not been disclosed.  


The response to the crash involved a coordinated effort from multiple emergency agencies, including the Troop L Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Specialist Unit, Troop L Forensic Services Unit, Life Lion EMS, South Central EMS, PennDOT, and the Lebanon County Coroner's Office. Cleanup and investigation efforts caused significant disruption to the highway, underscoring the severity of the collision.  


State police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. Authorities have urged witnesses or individuals with dashcam footage of the incident to come forward. James Stokes was more than a victim of this tragic accident; he was a beloved son, brother, and friend. The eldest child of Joann and Greg Stokes, James was known for his contagious humor and the ability to bring joy to those around him. “He lit up every room with his kindness and humor,” his grieving family shared, noting how much he loved making others laugh.  


The heartbreak of James's death is compounded by the fact that he had just lost one of his closest friends a day earlier. This double tragedy has left the Stokes family grappling with immense sorrow as they process two sudden and painful losses.  


In the wake of this devastating loss, the Stokes family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral and memorial expenses. The family expressed profound gratitude for the community’s overwhelming support during this difficult time.
