VAN WERT COUNTY, OHIO MAN JARETT CATLIN DIES IN SOLO CRASH ON WINTRY ROAD

A quiet road in Van Wert County turned deadly Friday morning when 33-year-old Jarett Catlin of Scott, Ohio lost his life in a single-vehicle crash that has left family and neighbors stunned. The crash happened around 10:30 a.m. Friday on Marsh Road near U.S. Route 224, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Early investigation shows Catlin was driving northbound on Marsh Road when his car left the road, first veering off the left side of the pavement before it slipped back across the center line and then slid off to the right. The vehicle struck a utility pole with such force that Catlin suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers at the scene said Catlin was not wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred, a factor that likely contributed to the severity of his injuries. In addition, alcohol impairment is believed to have played a role in the crash, though the investigation is still ongoing.

It was a cold morning with snow-covered roads reported in the region, and conditions may have made the roadway slick. Marsh Road is a rural stretch that many locals use daily to travel between farms and small communities, and troopers reminded drivers to adjust their speed and drive cautiously when winter weather hits.

First responders from multiple agencies rushed to the site, including Van Wert Police, county EMS and fire crews as well as Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers. Despite their rapid response, there was nothing that could be done to save Catlin.

Friends and neighbors described Catlin as a familiar face in the Scott area — someone who enjoyed life and was well liked in his community. As word spread Friday afternoon, many paused to reflect on how quickly a routine drive can turn tragic.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash. Troopers are urging motorists statewide to always wear a seat belt, never drive under the influence, and slow down on snow-covered roads in hopes of preventing another loss like this.
