18-Year-Old Charged in Deadly Robbery of PlayStation 5 Seller

The teenager accused of killing a man during an online sales meet-up last week is now in custody and facing capital murder charges. Zavion Joshua Pabon, 18, has been charged with capital murder and aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon in connection with the death of 37-year-old Tyler McGinty. According to McGinty’s mother, Tammy Smith, her son was selling a PlayStation 5 online for $350 and arranged to meet a potential buyer at a hotel in the 3800 block of Wilcrest near Westpark Drive.

During the transaction, Smith said her son was robbed and shot in the head. McGinty was transported to the hospital, where he was declared brain dead. “He got his head blown off for a PlayStation 5,” Smith lamented. She expressed disbelief, noting that she had sold several items online before without considering the possibility of such a tragic outcome. “You don’t think like that,” she said. “Normal people don’t do this. This isn’t a normal person. This is a very, very bad individual.”

Detective Jeff Brieden of the Houston Police Department’s Robbery Division explained that in cases of robbery during online meet-ups, it is typically the buyer who robs the seller, knowing the seller has cash on hand. He advised against using cash for such transactions. “Not necessarily using cash but instead to the effect of an app and agreeing to the fact that you’re going to use the app before you even get there so they know you aren’t carrying cash,” Brieden suggested.

The incident has highlighted the dangers associated with online sales meet-ups and the importance of taking precautions to ensure safety. The Houston Police Department continues to investigate the case, urging the public to be cautious when engaging in online transactions and to consider using secure payment methods to minimize the risk of robbery.

As the investigation unfolds, the community is left grappling with the senseless loss of Tyler McGinty. The case serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of online sales and the need for vigilance in such interactions. The authorities are committed to bringing justice to McGinty’s family and ensuring that the perpetrator is held accountable for his actions. Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Tyler McGinty during this difficult time. The Houston Police Department remains dedicated to providing updates and ensuring transparency throughout the investigation process.
