Elderly Topeka Pedestrian Emmett Leatherwood Dies After Being Struck by Vehicle

The Topeka Police Department (TPD) has identified 72-year-old Emmett Leatherwood as the pedestrian who died after being struck by a vehicle last week. Leatherwood, a Topeka resident, succumbed to his injuries shortly after being transported to a hospital.

The incident occurred on Monday, November 20, in the 1900 block of Southeast Adams Street. Authorities responded to reports of a crash involving a pedestrian at approximately 6 p.m. Emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene and provided immediate aid before transporting Leatherwood to the hospital. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is ongoing. While police have not yet released information about the driver involved or indicated whether charges may be filed, they are actively working to gather evidence and interview witnesses.

Leatherwood’s death has left his family and the broader Topeka community in mourning. His tragic passing serves as a reminder of the potential dangers faced by both pedestrians and drivers on busy streets.

The TPD has called for increased caution on roadways, urging drivers to remain attentive and reduce speeds, particularly in areas frequented by pedestrians. Additionally, pedestrians are reminded to use designated crossings and stay alert while navigating roadways.

As authorities continue their investigation, they encourage anyone with information about the incident to contact the Topeka Police Department. By piecing together the events leading up to the collision, officials hope to bring clarity to the case and reinforce road safety measures for the community.
