Cornell University Student Found Dead in Fall Creek Gorge Identified

The Cornell University community is grieving the loss of Winter Knutson, a sophomore student whose body was discovered in Fall Creek Gorge near the Stewart Avenue Bridge on Sunday morning. The university confirmed the tragic death on Monday, identifying Knutson as a math and physics major in the College of Arts and Sciences. A 2022 graduate of Ithaca High School, Knutson was known for their academic passion and dedication to learning.

Winter Knutson’s untimely death has left the campus in a state of shock. Vice President for Student and Campus Life, Ryan Lombardi, sent a message to students on Monday, acknowledging the immense grief felt by the community. Lombardi described the incident as “a very difficult time for our campus,” and emphasized the support systems available for students during this challenging period.

“Winter was passionate about their coursework and loved pursuing knowledge,” said a statement from the university. Knutson’s high school years were marked by active involvement in the Ithaca High School Math and Brain teams, as well as contributions to the school’s student-run newspaper, *The Tattler*. These accomplishments highlighted a student who was both intellectually curious and dedicated to making an impact in their community.

The discovery of Knutson’s body came just hours after a separate student was rescued from another part of Fall Creek Gorge in what authorities have called an unrelated incident. The rescued student, whose name has not been disclosed, is currently in the hospital. The circumstances surrounding both incidents remain under investigation, though officials have stressed that the two events are not connected.

As the community processes the tragedy, Dr. Lombardi reassured students that Cornell offers extensive resources for those in need of support. “There are vast resources at Cornell that I encourage you to utilize as needed in the coming days,” he wrote, urging students to take advantage of counseling and advocacy services.

The university is offering a variety of mental health resources, including the *Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS)*, which is providing drop-in hours through its *“Let’s Talk”* program. Students can also reach out for 24/7 support by calling 607-255-5155. Additionally, *Student Support & Advocacy Services*, located in the Dean of Students Office, are available for non-clinical confidential support. The office is offering walk-ins this week for students in need of guidance or simply someone to talk to.

In response to the grief and confusion on campus, a community support meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 12, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Goldwin Smith Hall, Room 132. This gathering will provide an opportunity for Cornell community members to come together, share their feelings, and find strength in one another during this difficult time.

Dr. Lombardi encouraged students to be there for each other, emphasizing the importance of compassion, empathy, and support. “Our sense of safety may feel shaken right now, but please remember that Cornell is a caring community,” he said. “Lean on each other and show support, empathy, and care to one another.”

The university has also shared resources for students who may need more specialized help, such as the *SHARE Office/Victim Advocacy Services* through Cornell Health. These services provide confidential assistance with no pressure to pursue specific outcomes.

Cornell continues to stress that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. “These resources are designed specifically to help in times like this — or anytime you may need guidance or assistance,” Dr. Lombardi reminded students. “Take the first step to seek them out as you may need, and please know that we are here to support each other.”

Details regarding Winter Knutson’s obituary and funeral arrangements will be released by the family in the coming days. The loss of such a bright and promising individual has left the Cornell University community in mourning. As the campus continues to come to terms with this tragic event, the support systems in place will play a critical role in helping students navigate their grief and find comfort in a time of great loss.
