51-Year-Old Glen Burnie Man Killed in Shooting After Altercation on Road

Glen Burnie, MD – A fatal shooting occurred on the evening of November 7, 2024, in Glen Burnie, Maryland, after a confrontation between two individuals escalated on a busy road. At approximately 8:20 p.m., officers from the Anne Arundel County Police Department responded to reports of a shooting near East Furnace Branch Road and Margate Drive.

Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered 51-year-old Scott David Guhse of Glen Burnie lying in the roadway, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, Guhse was pronounced dead at the scene by Fire Department personnel. The investigation into his death quickly became a homicide case, prompting the Anne Arundel County Police Homicide Unit to take over.

Alongside the deceased, officers found a 22-year-old man who identified himself as both a victim of an assault and the alleged shooter in the incident. The man reported that he had been involved in an altercation that led to the fatal shooting. His statements and further investigation details would soon reveal a complex sequence of events that escalated into violence.

According to preliminary findings, the incident began earlier in the evening when the 22-year-old was riding his motorcycle near Route 10 and Furnace Branch Road. During his ride, he noticed another vehicle following him closely, driving erratically. The vehicle's driver, later identified as Guhse, reportedly pulled up alongside the motorcyclist and shouted at him. Soon after, the two vehicles almost collided, which forced the motorcyclist to pull off the road to avoid a crash.

Both vehicles came to a stop on East Furnace Branch Road, where the situation intensified. Guhse, according to the 22-year-old, approached him aggressively while brandishing a hammer. In response to what he perceived as an imminent threat, the motorcyclist drew a handgun and shot Guhse.

The 22-year-old man was legally carrying the firearm, holding a concealed handgun carry permit through the state of Maryland. He has been cooperative with authorities throughout the investigation, but the circumstances surrounding the use of lethal force are now under scrutiny.

The Anne Arundel County Police Homicide Unit, supported by the Evidence Collection Unit, processed the scene. Multiple items of evidence were gathered, and detectives conducted interviews with witnesses who had observed the events leading up to the shooting. As part of their ongoing investigation, detectives will continue to analyze all available evidence, including statements from those who were present and forensic data from the crime scene.

At this time, authorities have not released further details about the specific relationship between the two individuals or the exact motive behind the aggressive encounter. However, investigators are focused on piecing together the final moments before the fatal shooting, with the aim of determining whether the actions of the motorcyclist were justified under Maryland’s self-defense laws.

As the investigation remains active, law enforcement officials are appealing to the public for any information that might aid in the case. Anyone with details related to the incident is urged to contact the Anne Arundel County Police Department’s Homicide Unit at 410-222-4731. Those who wish to remain anonymous can report tips through the police department’s tip line at 410-222-4700 or contact Crime Stoppers at 866-7LOCKUP.

The community remains on edge as authorities continue to gather information and determine what led to this tragic and violent encounter on the streets of Glen Burnie. The case serves as a stark reminder of how quickly road rage and aggressive behavior can escalate into deadly consequences.
