35-Year-Old Driver Killed in Long Beach Car Crash

On a tragic Tuesday morning, a fatal collision in Long Beach claimed the life of 35-year-old Sovan Koy, as reported by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office. The devastating accident occurred at approximately 7:35 a.m. at the busy intersection of Wardlow Road and Palo Verde Avenue, involving two vehicles. Koy, who was driving a 2002 Toyota Sequoia, was traveling eastbound on Wardlow Road when he failed to stop at a red light. At the same moment, a 2014 Toyota Tundra was moving southbound through the intersection on a green light, resulting in a severe collision.

The forceful impact of the collision caused Koy's vehicle to overturn, and he was violently ejected from the Sequoia. Unfortunately, Koy succumbed to his injuries at the scene, and first responders pronounced him dead. The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) reported that the driver of the Tundra remained at the scene and cooperated fully with the investigation. Thankfully, the driver of the Tundra did not sustain any injuries, and no charges have been announced against them at this time.

In response to the accident, authorities cordoned off the area around Wardlow Road and Palo Verde Avenue to thoroughly investigate the crash. Preliminary findings suggest that speed and distracted driving may have contributed to the accident. However, detectives continue to work diligently to gather additional information and evidence to better understand the circumstances leading up to the fatal collision.

The LBPD has issued an appeal to the public for assistance in the investigation. They urge anyone with information about the crash to contact LBPD Collision Investigation Detail Detective David Dougherty at 562-570-7355. Additionally, anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers by calling 800-222-8477 or visiting lacrimestoppers.org.

This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the paramount importance of adhering to traffic signals and eliminating distractions while driving. The Long Beach community is mourning the untimely loss of Sovan Koy, a tragic reminder of the potential consequences of inattentive or rushed driving. Officials remain committed to uncovering the full details surrounding the crash as their investigation continues. Our deepest condolences go out to Sovan Koy’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.
