17-Year-Old Shot and Killed in St. Thomas Early Sunday Morning

The Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD) is conducting an investigation into the devastating shooting of a 17-year-old boy in St. Thomas, which took place early Sunday morning near the Grand View Housing Community. This incident is particularly alarming as it marks the 20th homicide in St. Thomas this year and the 36th across the U.S. Virgin Islands, highlighting a troubling trend of escalating violence among the territory's youth.

At approximately 2:39 a.m. on Sunday, the VIPD's Shot Spotter detection system alerted officers to multiple gunshots in the Grand View area. Responding swiftly to the scene, officers discovered the victim, later identified as Kareem L. Pinney, who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency Medical Technicians were summoned; however, despite their efforts, the young man was pronounced dead at the scene. The police notified Pinney’s family of the tragedy, deepening the sorrow within the community.

Details surrounding the shooting remain sparse, as authorities have not disclosed any potential motives or suspects related to the incident. Nonetheless, the VIPD has expressed its determination to uncover the circumstances surrounding Pinney’s death. In a plea for public assistance, the department is encouraging community members to step forward with any information that may help the investigation.
