Albany Police Chief Michael Persley announced that an investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the shooting. Though multiple individuals have been detained, law enforcement officials have not yet confirmed their involvement in the incident. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is spearheading the probe, with assistance from state and local agencies.

As a precaution, an emergency lockdown was swiftly implemented across all Albany State University campuses. In an effort to ensure safety, the university has urged students, faculty, and staff to remain in their current locations until further notice. The university’s administration is actively coordinating with law enforcement to maintain order and provide essential support to those affected.

In a formal statement, Albany State University expressed its deep sadness over the tragic incident, emphasizing that the safety and security of its community remains a top priority. “The Albany State University family is deeply saddened to learn of an incident that took place on campus at approximately 8:50 p.m. on Saturday, October 19, 2024. Chief Persley has urged the public to stay away from the affected areas, stressing that the investigation remains active. "We are asking the public to please stay out of the area as we continue to secure the scene and gather evidence," Persley stated. Authorities are still piecing together the events that led to the shooting and are appealing to the community for any additional information that may aid in the investigation.

The shooting has cast a shadow over what was meant to be a weekend of celebration at ASU, with the university’s homecoming festivities taking place throughout the weekend. Events scheduled for Sunday were canceled in light of the tragedy, as the university shifts its focus to supporting the victims and their families.
