Brevet Sergeant Jason Doig, 53, Killed in The Line of Duty; Confronted by 26-Year-Old “armed Suspect,” While Responding to A Call in Senior, South Australia

In the vast expanse of South Australia, a profound sadness blankets the community as flags bow at half-mast, marking the untimely departure of a hero, Brevet Sergeant Jason Doig. A peaceful night in the southeast turned tragic when Sergeant Doig, alongside Constable Rebekah Cass and Sergeant Michael Hutchinson, responded to a seemingly routine call about an animal harmed by a firearm in the isolated rural property of Senior, near Bordertown. As they approached, a 26-year-old “armed suspect” confronted them, leading to a devastating moment—the first line-of-duty death for a serving police officer in the state in over two decades.

In the tight-knit community where Sergeant Doig had been a cherished member for more than 15 years, grief swept through like a somber wind. South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas expressed the collective sorrow, acknowledging Sergeant Doig as an “incredible man” who loved his job, emphasizing the immense loss felt by all. The routine call turned into a nightmare as the alleged gunman, known in the community but hailing from a neighboring state, opened fire, fatally wounding Sergeant Doig and injuring Sergeant Hutchinson.

The bravery exhibited by the officers in the aftermath of the shooting was commendable, with Constable Cass desperately trying to provide aid to her injured colleagues. Despite their efforts and the swift response of paramedics, Sergeant Doig succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The profound impact of this tragedy resonated not only within the police force but also across the entire South Australian community, highlighting the inherent risks faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty.

Commissioner Grant Stevens addressed the media, acknowledging the sacrifice made by Sergeant Doig and expressing the deep concern and care extended to the family and friends of police officers. The alleged gunman, now in the hospital under police guard, will face an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the officers’ attendance at the Senior property. As investigations continue, South Australia Police assures the community that there is no further threat, yet the shadows of this devastating day linger as the state mourns the loss of a dedicated public servant.
